US stocks fall as Meta, Microsoft drag; Fed rate concerns linger
<body><p>STORY: Wall Street closed lower on Thursday, with the Dow dropping nearly a quarter of a percent, the S&P 500 losing about 1% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq tumbling more than 1.5%.</p><p>Facebook parent Meta Platforms weighed heavily on the S&P and Nasdaq, with shares plunging more than 11%.</p><p>The social media company a day earlier forecast "notably larger" capital expenses next year due to investments in AI, with reports surfacing that it would raise cash through a bond sale.</p><p>Dean Smith is chief strategist and portfolio manager at FolioBeyond. </p><p>"You've got some really strong earnings from some of the tech companies, but you've also had some disappointments. One in particular is that Meta is facing some pushback from investors over its planned $30 billion bond offering. That is a very large number. [FLASH] They're trying to raise money to build out their data centers and technology infrastructure. Some other companies in the Magnificent Seven, so-called, it's kind of a mixed bag, but I think we're seeing the first glimmers of people starting to question whether this capital expenditure is going to pay off in the end. It's definitely a question that's been weighing on investors minds for quite some time.â</p><p>Microsoft shares ended down nearly 3% after the tech giant also warned that spending would rise this year.</p><p>Meanwhile, shares of Apple climbed more than 4% in extended trading, after CEO Tim Cook gave a forecast for holiday quarter iPhone sales and overall revenue that beat Wall Street expectations.</p><p>Shares of Netflix, which have gained more than 360% over the past three years, were up 3% in extended trading, after the streaming giant announced a ten-for-one forward stock split, making the company's shares more affordable for retail investors.</p><p>And shares of AI chip leader Nvidia fell 2% after it had given the market an extra boost the day before, when it became the first publicly listed company to surpass $5 trillion in market capitalization.</p></body>

Skyworks CEO sees chance to save power in AI-driven phones with Qorvo deal
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Skyworks Solutions CEO Phil Brace sees a path toward chips that would help smartphones have faster wireless data connections while consuming less power by combining his firm's technologies with those from smaller Qorvo, he told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. Skyworks on Tuesday announced a cash and stock offer to buy the smaller Qorvo that values Qorvo at $9.76 billion. <body><p>STORY: Amazon is planning its biggest job cuts since 2022. </p><p>It's aiming to axe as many as 30,000 corporate positions starting Tuesday.</p><p>According to three people familiar with the matter, the e-commerce giant is paring back expenses and compensating for overhiring during the peak demand of the pandemic.</p><p>The figure is roughly 10% of Amazon's corporate employees.</p><p>Cuts beginning this week may affect teams such as human resources, operations, and Amazon Web Services.</p><p>Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in June artificial intelligence tools would likely lead to more job cuts, automating repetitive and routine tasks.</p><p>Earlier this year, he installed an anonymous complaint line for identifying inefficiencies.</p><p>Sources say Amazon's five-day back-to-office policy - among tech's most stringent - has failed to generate enough attrition.</p><p>The sources cite that as another reason for the size of the layoff.</p><p>Some of the employees who are not swiping in daily because they live far from corporate offices, or for other reasons, are being told they have voluntarily quit Amazon and must leave without severance, a saving for the company.</p><p>Meanwhile, Amazon appears to be expecting another big holiday selling season.</p><p>It plans to offer 250,000 seasonal jobs to help staff warehouses and other needs, the same as in the past two years.</p></body>

<body><p>STORY: Shares of Qualcomm finished 11% higher and hit a 52-week high Monday after the chipmaker unveiled two new artificial intelligence chips for data centers.</p><p>The move helps it diversify beyond a stagnant smartphone market as it gears up to compete against Nvidia's AI data center dominance.</p><p>One of the new chips will be available next year and the other in 2027.</p><p>Qualcomm said the new chips support common AI frameworks and tools and played up cost-savings for enterprises.</p><p>Though competition against Nvidia has been heating up, the high costs of switching chip providers and superior performance of Nvidia processors has made it difficult for new entrants to gain traction.</p><p>Qualcomm is the world's largest supplier of modem chips that enable smartphones to connect to wireless data networks which make up a majority of its sales.</p><p>It has been diversifying its business to reduce dependence on the smartphone market after losing Huawei as a major customer and after Apple - which has also been a big customer - began developing chips in house. </p></body>
